As a longtime fan and host of Sportstalk, I am baffled why UTEP never approached Paul Strelzin about returning to the Don Haskins Center. Even if it was for just one game, the Strelz deserves an opportunity to get behind the microphone and shout out “Minerball”.

Big men, perimeter shooters, solid guards and athleticism. You'll pardon UTEP head men's basketball coach Tim Floyd if he seems cautiously optimistic for his 2012-13 Miners. El Paso gets its first look Saturday night for free at the Haskins Center for the Orange & White scrimmage.

When I heard the news that the UTEP Men's basketball team was "Bringing Back the 80's," I could not be any happier. Some of my favorite Miner memories were from the teams of the 1980s. Who could forget names like Terry White, Virgil Kennedy, Fred Reynolds, Luster Goodwin, Juden Smith, Kent Lockhart, Dave Feitl, Wayne "Soup" Campbell, Tim Hardaway, Chris, Blocker, Greg Foster, and so many more.

It's hard to believe it's been four years since El Paso lost the man who put UTEP -- if not El Paso -- on the map. Don Haskins died on this day in 2008. In tribute, here's the feature on his viewing at the Haskins Center, along with testimonies former former players and assistants (including UTEP coach Tim Floyd, then at USC) on Haskins' impact on their lives.

Last season was quite a challenge for the UTEP basketball team to say the least.  The squad, which  predominantly consisted of freshmen, finished the season under .500 with a record of 15-17.  UTEP made it to the Quarterfinal round of the C-USA Tournament before losing to Memphis.

By the time you're stuffing you're face with a second or third plate of Thanksgiving dinner, the Miners will be taking on the Oklahoma Sooners in Orlando. UTEP and Oklahoma tip of at 5 pm on ESPN2.

UTEP called a 1 p.m. press conference this afternoon to announce that the basketball team will play the University of Arizona in Tucson on Nov. 15, 2012.  The two teams will take the year off in 2013, and the Wildcats will return to El Paso in 2014...

We are still months away from the start of the 2012 UTEP mens' basketball season, but Tim Floyd confirmed some key home matchups.  The Miners have return games set with Oregon and UNLV, and are close to finalizing a game against Oral Roberts...

All the momentum UTEP had after consecutive wins over Memphis and Southern Miss seems to be gone.  After a lackluster performance against UCF over the weekend, the Miners dropped their final home game of the season, 68-61 to Rice. Tim Floyd went with the unusual starting line-up of Jacques Streeter, Jalen Ragland, Cedrick Lang, and walk-ons Tyler Tafoya and Mauricio Cheda...
