Andy Lee

KROD-AndyLee200x200

Game 7 of the 1991 World Series was a turning point in Andy Lee’s life.  For better or worse, it was the moment a seven year old Andy Lee became obsessed with sports.

Born and raised in El Paso, Andy is the grandson of former major leaguer and UTEP baseball coach Andy Cohen, so it makes perfect sense that a passion for sports runs in the family.

After graduating from Coronado High School in 2002, Andy went out west to Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles for two years before returning to Texas to play golf at Division III Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

He graduated with a degree in business in May of 2007, with no intention of using it.  After toiling around in Austin, Texas for a year, a chance phone call changed Andy’s career prospects.

On a hunch, his mother Marina called Steve Kaplowitz to see if there was any opening at KROD for her son who was passionate about sports but lacked any broadcasting experience or training.  As the cliché goes, timing is everything, and Andy was offered a position to replace the departing Quinton Martinez in May of 2008.

Currently Andy produces and co-hosts Sportstalk with Steve Kaplowitz, and hosts Football Friday Night with Tony Grijalva .

In his free time you can find Andy watching sports, playing sports, making friendly ‘wagers’ on sports, or locating obscure Late Night With David Letterman clips from the 1980s on YouTube.

Andy is also a six time champion of the LPGA's du Maurier Classic.

Drop Andy a line at alee@krod.com.  He'll get back to you in a reasonable amount of time.

Mike Francesa Thinks Twitter is Stupid and Should be Banned

Long time New York City sports radio personality Mike Francesa went on an anti-Twitter rant on his show yesterday.  He basically said Twitter is an inane online community for morons who have nothing of import to say (I'm paraphrasing, of course)

Long Live the Red Bull Flugtag Commercial

In 1991, Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz had a brilliant idea.  He created an event in which people made homemade 'flying machines' and attempted to fly them off a pier.  Thus, the Red Bull Flugtag (German for airshow) was born

Dan Majerle Catches a Ground Rule Double

Former NBA gunner 'Thunder' Dan Majerle was taking in a Diamondbacks game on Saturday night from the comfortable confines of the Chase Field pool.  Majerle was enjoying a plate of food when Arizona's Gerardo Parra clubbed a ground rule double that one hopped the fence in right-center field

Josh Beckett Reminds Me Why Hiring Golf Nuts is a Bad Idea

Veteran pitcher Josh Beckett ruffled some feathers in Boston when he recently played golf on his off day.  Beckett was scheduled to start the night before, but was a late scratch with a sore lat.  This may not have been a major issue in the Boston media if Beckett wasn't the perceived ring leader of a pitching staff that played video games, drank beer, and ate fried chicken while the Red Sox burned last September

Kobe Bryant’s Mask Fetches $67,100 in eBay Auction

One of the downsides to being rich is that the rich are expected to bid exorbitant amounts on mostly worthless items in charity auctions.  I know they can later write off the expense, and the money goes to a worthy cause, but who really wants to drop $100,000 on a pair of slippers once worn by Marilyn Monroe?

I guess money is no object to some people who really want to own a piece of memorabilia, but I think the charity angle drives up the prices more than fandom

Teen Jeopardy Contestant Thinks Eli Manning is Aaron Rodgers

The high school kids that appear on 'Teen Jeopardy' are among the best and brightest young minds our country has to offer.  Their knowledge of Greek tragedies would likely put most of us to shame, but God forbid you ask them to pick Eli Manning out of a lineup

Rajon Rondo Doesn’t Want to be Filmed After Loss to Hawks

Celtics' point guard Rajon Rondo is a fiery guy.  Because of this he has endeared himself to Boston fans.  His turnover in the waning seconds of last night's game ensured a Hawks victory.  Before a press conference he was enjoying a little family time with Atlanta's Josh Smith
