Triple Digit Talk: A Look Back At El Paso’s Triple Digit Heat Records

El Paso, We did it. We hit our first 100 degree day of the year!

Honestly, I’m not even sure why I’m celebrating this information because me and the heat are NOT besties but from a weather perspective, it’s something to jot down because forecasters were calling for triple digit heat this Sunday but apparently Mother Nature doesn’t check her email on the weekend and was a day late. Same girl, same.

Anyways, Monday’s triple digit high of 101 degrees broke the record high of 98 degrees that was set back in 2018, according to the National Service of El Paso.

While we’re on the subject of history breaking records, let’s take a stroll down memory lane to talk about El Paso’s record breaking heat history. (Try saying that fast three times.)

Let’s Talk 90 Degree Heat:

According to the National Weather Service, the earliest 90 degree day or above was held back in March of 1907 when the borderland reached 91 degrees. The latest 90 degree day or above was October 26, 1979.

From May 27 - September 9, 2015 El Paso records show that the borderland had 106 consecutive days of 90 degree days or above!

Alright, Let’s Talk Triple Digits:

The earliest day with triple digit heat was just two years ago in El Paso.

May 7, 2020 the borderland hit 100 degrees. The latest triple digit day was back on September 16, 1956 when the borderland hit 101 degrees.

Back in 1994 El Paso held the record for the most consecutive 100 degree days or above when we experienced 23 days of nothing but triple digit afternoons during June 23 - July 15, 1994. I’m really hoping history doesn’t repeat itself with that record!

So, while we did in fact hit our first triple digit day for the year we can take comfort in knowing that we won’t be expecting triple digits for the rest of this week.

80 degree temperatures are expected this weekend however, don’t get used to it because Summer is only a month away, Wednesday, June 21st to be exact, so…. May the odds be ever in our favor.
