A new mural inspired by the Disney/Pixar animated film Coco has gone up in El Paso's Lower Valley, paying homage to our Abuelita's (Grandma's) across the borderland.

Local artist Ruben Mariscal aka Midnight Maurauder on Instagram, and a few other local artists, came together to replicate scenes from the beloved 2017 animated film.

Mariscal initially wanted to paint something that would flex his artistic skills while challenging him to step outside his usual graffiti-style art.

He then brought in other artists who decided that they too would pay homage to their respective Abuelitas and all the other grandmas who helped raise their grandchildren across the borderland, serving as conduits of our cultural past while keeping our customs and folk traditions alive.

The mural's location near the Ascarate neighborhood is also significant as one of the artists grew up near the area visiting his grandmother. Bringing some fun and color to the area, the mural wall measures out about 7ft tall and 125 feet long and is part of the Torres Auto Shop that separates a canal and the rest of the neighborhood.

Working day and night and about 30 hours later, the Coco-inspired mural turned out like a mini-movie reel of the animated film transitioning from the land of the living into the land of the dead.

Mariscal, along with a handful of local artists, created the Coco-inspired mural featuring the animated film's main characters, including Miguel, Mamá Imelda, and her Alibrije Pepita, Hector, Ernesto de la Cruz, Dante, and of course Abuelita and Coco.
