Week two of high school football in El Paso is already in the books! Let's check out the coverage from over the weekend:

Midland holds off Pebble Hills 28-23

By Jeremy Carranco

UTEP commit Elijah McCoy scored three touchdowns, running for over 150 yards to help Midland beat Pebble Hills at the new SAC on Friday night.

Pebble Hills couldn’t find the scoreboard last week in a 7-0 loss at Canutillo but finally got their offense going against Midland. The Spartans were led by QB Joe Fernandez and RB Zereian Quarles who ran for a combined 200 yards. Both players got a touchdown a piece in the loss.

Trailing 28-17 early in the 4th quarter, the Spartans were forced to put in backup QB Elijah Pena after Joe Fernandez left with a left leg injury. He did not return. Pena found Julian Vasquez for a 54-yard touchdown pass that made it 28-23 with three minutes to go. The Spartans got the ball back with two minutes to go but Pena was intercepted by Jojo Lievans to close out the game for Midland. Lievans had two interceptions on the night.

Pebble Hills (0-2) will face Americas next week while Midland (1-1) takes on Amarillo.

Permian’s Mojo gets the best of Eastlake

By Steve Escajeda

On a night when they compiled 414 rushing yards, it was a touchdown pass with 34 seconds left in the game that lifted Odessa Permian to a 56-49 victory over Eastlake.

Permian’s Jakob Garcia hit fullback Luke Paradeaux with the pass, which broke a 49-49 tie in a contest where neither had more than a touchdown lead the entire game.

The Eastlake Falcons, which put up 588 total yards and 62 points in their opener against Bel Air, gained another 549 against a Permian defense which held Plano to just 10 points a week ago.

In the end, it was Permian’s rushing attack that dominated the game. The Panthers were led on the ground by Galvin Black (208 yards, 2 TDs) and Tyran Williams (11 carries, 102 Yards). Williams also added an 82-yard kickoff return for Permian’s first points of the game.

Eastlake was led by quarterback Luke Lomeli, who was 26-for 42 for 392 yards. He threw five touchdown passes and had two interceptions. Lomeli also ran for 94 yards and another score. His five TD passes already give him nine for the first two weeks of the season.

Chris Garcia caught nine passes for 153 yards, while Junior Trotman had six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

In a game that featured 105 points and over 1,100 yards, Eastlake’s Dominic Soto did his best to represent the defense with two interceptions.

The Falcons will try to regroup next week against another group of Panthers when they travel to Midland to take on the (1-1) Liberty Hill Panthers.

El Paso bests Mountain View, 21-12

By Angel Torres

The El Paso High Tigers defeated the Mountain View Lobos at Lobo stadium 21-12 in a crucial non-district game. On the very first play of the game, Mt. View running back Omar Nevarez took a handoff 71 yards for his only score of the night. The extra point would be no good, but the Lobos would lead 6-0. Nevarez would leave the game sometime in the first half with an undisclosed injury. They would also lose wideout Diego Gonzales to a shoulder injury on his only catch of the day which came on their second series of the game.

The Lobos defense forced the Tigers to go three and out on their first two possessions but in turn, Mt. View would turn the ball over in the end zone on consecutive drives. This allowed El Paso High to regain their composure behind their rushing duo of Christopher Valenzuela and Luis Moreno. The Tigers would cap off a short drive when quarterback Martin Gonzalez hit Santiago for a 10-yard touchdown pass. On the first play of their next series, Martin would hit wideout Derek Rodriguez for a 69-yard catch and touchdown run putting the Tigers up 14-6. With time ticking down and facing a frantic Lobo offense, the Tigers defense made a goal line stand at the buzzer giving them a 14-6 lead at the half.

In the second half, Tigers quarterback Martin Gonzalez once again found Diego Santiago in the back of the end zone giving El Paso High a 21-6 lead. MT. View would answer with a 12 play, 62-yard drive capped off with a 10-yard touchdown run from running back Esteban Garcia with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter. Their two-point attempt was no-good. Mt. View would have their chances, but quarterback Angel Gomez would throw his second and third interceptions in the second half. El Paso High would once again control the clock with their run game and move to 1-1 on the season and now must prepare to travel to Del Valle next week. Mt. View drops to 1-1 and now faces Austin next, who defeated El Paso High in week one.

Irvin wins first in Elliot era, 24-21 over Bel Air

By Alberto Urueta

Irvin Head Coach Jon Elliott was able to capture his first win at the helm of the Rockets by defeating the Bel Air Highlanders 24-21, officially moving the Rockets to 1-1. The Rockets shot out of the gate firing on all cylinders and built a 10-0 lead after a 2 yard TD run by Running Back #14 Michael Medina. Bel Air responded with a dual raid attack led by QB Angel Hernandez, he was 19 of 25 for 257 yards and a touchdown while gaining 64 yards on 13 carries. Irvin was able to avenge the 60-0 loss to the Bel Air Highlanders that happened just last year and although it was a new coaching staff the players remained and remembered the loss. Bel Air (0-2) moves on to play Socorro this upcoming Friday. Meanwhile Irvin will have a bye week before taking on Riverside September 20th.

Del Valle proves their prowess, defeats 6A Franklin, 24-14

By Sebastian Perez-Navarro

After losing out on Week 1, the Del Valle Conquistadores marched into Franklin to beat the Cougars 24-14. The Conquistadores were led by a strong performance by their two nationally recruited superstars. Junior quarterback Jake Fette put up a- 27 yard passing touchdown connecting with senior Ryu Nunez. Despite being shut down in the first half, Franklin was able to keep it close with a strong run game. The Cougars surged to almost 300 yards through the ground in the whole game, with Jr Erinie Powers leading the charge punching a 54 yard touchdown in to cut Del Valle’s first half 10-0 lead to three. But then, Fette showed why he has scouts foaming at the mouth by zipping one with his legs to the house from 49 yards out. Franklin would retaliate, as a long sustained drive near the end of the third ended in a Atreyu DeLaRiva five yard score. Then, Manny Fuller got the ball, pioneering a Conquistador charge in which he capped off running in a 16 yard touchdown and extending Del Valle’s lead by 10. Two late picks thrown by Lucas Garza put the game on ice for the Conquistadores, and as a result… have put the whole 915 on notice.

Coronado prevails over Andress 28-18

By Brandon Cohn
On a beautiful breezy early September evening in west El Paso, the Coronado T-Birds soared a bit higher than the Andress Eagles to improve their unblemished record to 2-0.
The first half was a bit sloppy to say the least as T-Bird’s signal caller Ben Wilson threw two interceptions and had a fumble.  Their defense came up big in the first quarter as Coronado’s Max Wherret took a pick-six 63 yards to give the T-Birds an early 7-0 lead.
The Eagles would tie up the contest when QB Milton found Clayton for the 40-YD TD.  The T-Bird turnovers kept the game close as Coronado held a narrow 14-10 lead at the half.
Coronado came out in the second half by scoring twice in the third quarter (Wilson 9-YD keeper, and RB Hunt 15-YD TD run).  The Eagles got within 10-points at 28-18 when QB Milton called his own number on a 44-YD keeper with 11:01 remaining in the contest.

Andress was driving as time was running out to make it a bit closer but WR Cason Golding solidified the victory with a late INT.  The T-Birds will next travel to Parkland on September 20, while Andress (0-2) will host Jefferson on September 13.
