Thursday night: Eastlake holds off Eastwood, 49-28
In a key district matchup, the Eastlake Falcons kept their perfect district record intact with a swift 49-28 win against Eastwood on Thursday night. The Falcons never trailed in the game and forced five turnovers to win this important district game.
Eastlake led 21-14 at halftime thanks to cornerback Dominic Soto, who returned an 83-yard interception for a touchdown, recorded a second interception in the half and recovered a fumble in the end zone, which could've been an Eastwood touchdown.
Another standout for the Falcons was defensive back Chris Garcia, who returned a punt for a 50-yard touchdown and also snagged a second half interception to help seal the game.
Game of the Week: Del Valle at Chapin
Del Valle (4-0) is still the cream of the crop across the city of El Paso in their quest for an unbeaten season. Chapin (3-2) is likely the last team on the Conquistadores' schedule which can play spoiler on Friday. Though unlikely, Chapin has shown that when quarterback Evan Rivera (1,428 passing yards) and ATH Daveon Singelton (1,000 total yards) are clicking, they are tough to beat.
Still, this is Del Valle's town for high school football. Junior quarterback sensation Jake Fette's nine touchdown passes don't do him justice on his dominance this year. And, Del Valle has weapons galore, plus an admirable defense that can stifle the best offenses. Fette is the best player in town and he's on a mission to guide the team to an undefeated season.
Prediction: Del Valle 45 - Chapin 21
Key 6A matchup: Coronado vs. Pebble Hills
In a game that could decide playoff fate for these two squads, Coronado (3-1) will face Pebble Hills (1-3) on Friday for what could end up being the dark horse game of the night.
Last week, Coronado lost a heartbreaker in the west side bowl to Franklin, 16-13. They are led by quarterback Ben Wilson and a group of skill position players like running back Cody Hunt and receivers Christian Frescas and Cason Golding. However, Coronado needs a signature win on the year to maintain playoff aspirations.
Pebble HIlls boasts one of the city's top young gunslingers in sophomore quarterback Joe Fernandez (307 passing/189 rushing yards). His skill position players are young and inexperienced, but the potential is there. The Spartans will lean on the run game with senior Zereian Quarles leading the way for the team.
Prediction: Pebble Hills 35 - Coronado 34
