Eastlake clinches share of 1-6A crown
By Steve Escajeda
The Eastlake Falcons (5-0 in district, 6-3 overall) cliched at least a share of the District 1-6A crown by outlasting the Pebble Hills Spartans 28-20 Friday night.
With one game left in the regular season, Eastlake can claim the title outright with a win over Coronado (2-3, 5-3) Thursday, or a Pebble Hills (4-1, 5-4) loss at Franklin (3-2, 5-4) on Thursday night.
The Falcons took advantage of three Spartan turnovers and some poor special teams play to eke out the win. Pebble Hills sophomore quarterback Joe Fernandez threw three interceptions, one of them was returned 25 yards for a touchdown by Eastlake’s Damian Saenz.
The Spartans special teams had two blunders in the game, the first allowing a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown by Eastlake’s Chris Garcia.
The other mistake came when Eastlake was facing a fourth-and-3 and had to punt from their own 17-yard line with just over a minute left in the game. Down 28-20, the Spartans were hoping to get the ball around midfield and hopefully try and tie the game, but two Pebble Hills rushers were penalized for running into the punter as he kicked the ball; Eastlake was awarded a first down and ran out the clock.
Eastlake’s Steven Galindo led the rushing attack with 113 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Luke Lomeli was 8-of-14 for 113 yards and a touchdown.
As usual, Zereian Quarles led Pebble Hills with 203 yards rushing and a touchdown, while also catching a touchdown pass in the win.
El Dorado wins first district title since 2016 in 57-20 win over Americas
By Jeremy Carranco
The Aztecs came into their game against Americas on Friday night with one goal, win and secure its first district title since 2016.
They did so, dominating the Trailblazers 57-20 to win the district 1-5A title and spoil senior night for Americas. El Dorado is now 9-0 and one win away from going undefeated for the first time in school history.
The Aztecs never trailed in its big win over Americas, leading 21-7 at the end of the first quarter and 43-7 at halftime. El Dorado’s junior running back Ryan Estrada eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for the season with over 240 yards and three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Elijah Issa had a nice night as well for the Aztecs, throwing four touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns were caught by senior wide receiver Diego Carrasco who also had over 140 receiving yards.
El Dorado will now travel to Parkland to close out the regular season and attempt to remain perfect at 10-0 before playoffs.
Americas junior running back Cam’Ron Johnson ran for over 160 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The Trailblazers need to win next week against Bel Air, and Parkland will need to lose to El Dorado for Americas to secure the two seed in district 1-5A and host for the bi-district round of the playoffs.
Riversides halts Ysleta's streak with 24-20 win
By Brandon Cohn
On a majestic early November evening at Tom Work Riverfront Stadium, the Rangers clinched the second seed in the 1-4A playoffs with an impressive 24-20 win over foe Ysleta.
The first half was a see-saw back-and-forth battle that gave the Indians a slight 20-17 edge at the intermission, thanks in part to a couple of Riverside turnovers.
The Rangers retook the lead, 24-20, late in the contest following a 20-yard keeper by QB Rojas III.
The Indians were driving for a potential game-winning score with under five minutes left in the contest, but an interception by QB Martinez solidified the victory for the Rangers.
The game was won thanks to the incredible effort by Riverside QB Rojas who accumulated a whopping 217 yards on just 17 carries, and scored 3 touchdowns.
With the victory, the Rangers improve to 8-1, (6-1) 1-4A, and will conclude their 2024 campaign at Fabens on November 8.
Ysleta falls to 7-2, (5-2) 1-4A, and will host Bowie next Friday to finish off their regular season.
Del Valle caps off perfect season with 70-point romp of Burges
By Jorge Guajardo
Del Valle secured their third straight district title after obliterating Burges 70-17 on Friday night.
The victory secured Del Valle’s three-peat district title and the Conquistadores' first undefeated season since 2000.
Leading the way for Del Valle’s destruction of Burges was none other than junior quarterback Jake Fette, who shredded the Mustang defense averaging 18 yards a completion. Fette, who was pulled midway through the third quarter, finished with 12 completions on 19 attempts for 226 yards and three touchdowns, one of which was a 60-yard bomb from the first play from scrimmage.
Fette wasn’t the only one to get going on Friday night. The Conquistadores’ run game was also unleashed on Burges as Del Valle ran for 176 yards on 19 attempts for a whopping 9.26 yards a carry. Manny Fuller led the way for the ground attack rushing 6 times for 56 yards and three touchdowns.
Notably after nearly a year and a half of battling injuries, senior receiver/defensive-back Matthew Lopez made a triumphant return after picking up a Burges fumble and taking it 25 yards for the score late in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Burges had a tough day at the office. They totaled just 160 total yards on offense and scored a lone offensive touchdown which was a 59-yard catch and run by Tyree Lewis.
The only other touchdown for Burges came on a 99-yard Jayden Bowser kick-off return after he muffed fielding the kick and got by a swarm of Del Valle defenders.
Burges will look to finish their season on a strong note, against the El Paso Tigers next Friday, while Del Valle will have the week off to prepare for their state playoff run where they will likely face Palo-Duro Amarillo for a chance a the bi-district title.
Eagles Force Win and In After Pushing Past the Tigers
By Sebastian Perez-Navarro
After Andress’ second district loss of the season, many wondered if the Eagles were in for a trap game against the eliminated from playoff contention El Paso High. They avoided any trouble in a 34-7 home win.
Upon leading the first drive of the game, sophomore quarterback Jamari Milton’s job was simple, complete the screens. He did just that, and wide receivers Jared Gordan and Mikeil Taylor did the rest of the work. The senior, Gordon, was able to bring the offense inside of the 10, while the junior, Taylor found the endzone to put the Eagles up 7-0.
It was time for senior quarterback Martin Gonzalez to have a crack at it. But a costly mishandled snap forced the Tigers to punt.
For the next two drives, the Eagles let their senior stud Marcus Wilson do all the work, as the running back gained back-to-back touchdowns on Andress’s two ensuing drives.
Andress extended their lead to 27 points after a punt return touchdown, yet El Paso didn’t go into the half with a goose egg. Gonzalez and the Tiger offense for the first time all night found their groove, and the senior capped off the drive with a rushing touchdown.
The second half marked a shutout for the dominant Eagle defense, and Milton put the cherry on top of the senior night win after connecting with Taylor for the second time that night.
Now, all the Eagles have to do is win and they are in the playoffs, but it won’t be easy. The Eagles have to make the trip out to Canutillo, as Milton has possibly the toughest test of his young career awaiting him.
Andress can lose that game and still make the tournament only if Chapin takes care of Hanks.
Next week, the 20-plus year Eagle playoff streak is on the line.
The Tigers might not have playoff hopes, but the seniors hope to give a memorable goodbye in their last game at the historic R.R Jones Stadium.
