Thursday overview
On a rare, yet busy Thursday evening in the bi-district round, there are four in-town games and some out of town hopefuls to kick things off.
Del Valle (9-0) will bring their unbeaten season to the postseason to open things on Thursday as they host Abilene Cooper (4-6). The Conquistadores have been the best team in town all season and could be destined for a run during the playoffs. In the same district but opposite sides of town, Canutillo (9-1) hosts Lubbock Cooper (7-3) in the bi-district opener of Class 5A Division 2. Even though they are playing without their quarterback Matthew Gasca, Canutillo's defense can make a difference in this opening playoff matchup. In the 6A ranks, Franklin (6-4) hosts Midland Legacy (5-5) on the west side. After a 49-35 win against Pebble Hills last week, the Cougars hope to carry some momentum going into this matchup against a balanced Rebels offense. They will need an explosive running game from junior Ernie Powers (2,125 rushing yards).
Friday rundown
Most of the matchups on Friday will be played on the road or at a neutral site. The three games I will have my eyes on: Permian coming to town to face Eastlake, El Dorado trying to continue their perfect season against Amarillo and Riverside facing Hereford at Ratliff Stadium. The Falcons (7-3) have been playing their best football as of late and enter the bi-district round on a six-game win streak. El Dorado (10-0) ended their season with an unblemished record. They will have Amarillo High (5-4) at the SAC on Friday, which feels like a winnable game for the Aztecs to continue their postseason run. Meanwhile, Riverside (9-1) has a tough 4A first round matchup against Hereford (6-4). They have the talent to win this, but they will need a big game from QB/ATH Carlos Rojas III.
