Andress stuns Hanks in overtime, 49-42

By Steve Escajeda

And the children shall lead them.

Andress sophomore quarterback Jamari Milton hit freshman wide receiver Avant Clayton with a 17-yard touchdown pass in overtime to give the Eagles a thrilling 49-42 victory over the Hanks Knights Friday night.

The win was the first in District 1-5A (Div. 2) for Andress (1-1 in district, 2-3 overall), while Hanks suffered its first defeat of the season (1-1, 3-1).

In a see-saw affair, the Eagles were down 42-35 late in the fourth quarter, when Milton found receiver Mikeil Taylor for a 39-yard bomb to tie the game with just 1:07 left.

Milton finished the game connecting on 19 of his 35 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns.

Milton’s top two targets were Clayton, who caught seven passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns (to go along with a rushing TD), and Jared Gordon, who finished with eight grabs for 120 yards and a score.

The Knights were led by some youngsters of their own. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Morales had a huge game, going 22 of 34 for 309 yards and a whopping six touchdowns.

Five of the touchdown passes went to Alex Robles, another sophomore. Robles caught 10 passes for 178 yards.

Deonte Wensel also had a big game for the Knights with eight catches for 102 yards and a score.

Hanks will try to recover when they host the Burges Mustangs (1-2, 2-3) next Friday, while Andress will try to continue their winning ways Friday night at Horizon (0-2, 1-3).

Austin comes back late to hand Ysleta first loss, 36-35

By Jeremy Carranco

Senior Oscar Flores scored two late touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:30 remaining to keep Austin undefeated in district 1-4A and hand Ysleta its first loss of the season.

Trailing Ysleta 35-21 with 10 minutes to go, Austin had to go to work in a hurry. Flores put the team on his back, scoring a touchdown on a fourth down and three from 10 yards out with a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to six (35-29) with seven minutes to go. He then found the endzone again with 1:30 remaining to tie the game 35-35 which allowed Ysleta kicker Uriel Paniagua’s extra point to be the game-winning kick.

Ysleta had a chance to win the game on the final drive on a Rodrigo Martinez hail mary attempt from the 40-yard line but it was intercepted in the endzone.

Austin’s star sophomore running back Sal Duatre had another great game for the Panthers, he finished with over 200 yards and two touchdowns.

The Indians were led by sophomore quarterback Rodrigo Martinez who threw for over 330 yards with two touchdowns including an 18-yard rushing touchdown. Receivers Evan Martinez and Armando Guzman both caught a touchdown, with each going over 80 yards in receiving. Ysleta also got contributions on the ground from Martin Castro and Erek Solis who each rushed for a touchdown in the loss.

Both teams will face Fabens in their next matchup, however, Ysleta will have a bye before facing the Wildcats on Oct. 11.

Del Valle shuts out Jefferson, 58-0

By Sebastian Perez-Navarro

Del Valle dominated the Jefferson Silver Foxes, 58-0. Friday’s main attraction was none other than recent Arizona State commit Jake Fette. The future Sun Devil played lights out, reaching over 100 yards through the air and two touchdowns before being seated at the start of the second half. Manny Fuller, the future Utah, had a 100-yard day and found the end zone in the game. Junior Abraham Garcia picked off Silver Foxes quarterback Jesus Gomez in the first quarter. When reaching the beginning of the second half, junior Mateo Santibanez raced to the snap of a punt, ultimately blocking it and returning it for a touchdown. Jefferson on the other hand, had only 47 total yards of offense.

Franklin squeezes past Coronado in the 30th West Side Bowl, 16-13

By Sebastian Perez-Navarro

In a back-and-forth game, Franklin squeezed past Coronado, 16-13 in the 30th edition of the West Side Bowl.

Coronado brought thunder into the area early on, as junior Ben Wilson found sophomore Christian Frescas out from 65 yards and delivered a touchdown dart. The sophomore’s catch was his first touchdown of the season. It would take until the second quarter for Franklin to find the endzone, but they did so through the power of none other than junior Ernie Powers. Both teams went into the locker room tied, 7-7.

Once returning from the break, junior Lucas Garza led Franklin into the red zone but had a touchdown called back due to a rare Justin Morales holding call. Franklin coach Daren Walker gambled on fourth and goal but didn't convert. On the ensuing possession, the Thunderbirds could not extend the field through the ground and gave up a safety to the Cougars. Upon receiving, Franklin marched down the field, culminating in a 35-yard touchdown throw from Garza to sophomore Santiago Perez, extending Franklin's lead 16-7. Despite a 65-yard touchdown from Nathan Quinn, Coronado couldn't score in the closing moments and lost, 16-13.

Huskies chomp the Mustangs, 45-21

By Jorge Guajardo

Chapin improved to 3-2 on the season with a resounding 45-21 victory over district opponent Burges Friday night.

The Huskies, led offensively by Evan Rivera and Deveon Singleton, were nearly unstoppable when it came to moving the ball. After a rough first half that saw neither team convert a single third down, Chapin unleashed its offense in the second half, amassing 619 total yards of offense.

Rivera led the way offensively, throwing for 355 yards and two touchdowns on 13 of 20 passing while also finding seven different receivers throughout the game. Singleton, meanwhile, racked up 314 total yards of his own between his rushing, passing, and receiving attempts while also tallying two rushing touchdowns in the contest.

Singleton had a spectacular 48-yard catch and ran in the fourth quarter off a screen pass where he had Bruges defenders sliding off him while attempting tackles using his spin move to continue to fight through traffic to gain tough yards in an already decided contest and topped off the play with a prime Zeke-like hurdle over an unfortunate Mustang defender.

For Burges, yards were hard to come by. Quarterback Marcus Sanchez did not compete a pass until midway into the fourth quarter, which contributed to Burges’ scoreless first half.

As the second half got underway, with Chapin kicking off to Burges, Mustang receiver Jayden Bowser took the kick-off 97 yards to the house after bobbling the return, giving the Mustangs life. The ensuing Mustangs offensive drive after a defensive stop would see running back Luke Dexter-Quinn score on 16 16-yard run to make the game 17-14 early in the third quarter.

Dexter-Quinn was among the few bright spots for Burges as he tallied 168 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard run early in the fourth quarter to keep the Mustangs within 10 points of the Huskies.

Burges, who fell to 2-3 on the season, will look to rebound in district play at Hanks next week.  Meanwhile, Chapin, winners of three straight, will have to face the undefeated Del Valle Conquistadors and Arizona State verbal commit Jake Fette in what should be an entertaining district battle.

Troopers fend off Bulldogs, 49-14

By Angel Torres

The Eastwood Troopers (3-2) opened district 1-6A play with a 49-14 win at home against the Socorro Bulldogs (2-3). Socorro went up early with an 18-yard touchdown run thanks to running back Eder Hernandez, who would finish the night with 27 carries for 106 yards.

Eastwood retorted with Jayden Deal, who returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. The Troopers took a 21-14 lead going into halftime, but the third quarter is where the separation between the two teams took place. Socorro turned the ball over three times in their own territory before the midway point of the third quarter and Eastwood capitalized on scoring touchdowns all three times.

Eastwood quarterback Ethan Camacho, who started in place of the injured Joseph Cox, ran six times for 21 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns on the night. Next for both teams, Eastwood faces Eastlake on Thursday, Oct. 3, while Socorro will enjoy their bye week and squares off at Eastlake on Friday, October 11.
