Adding a grocery store as part of downtown El Paso's revitalization plan should be considered.

Downtown El Paso was once a booming part of the city, but over the years, the once-thriving commerce has dwindled.

Even before Covid impacted businesses, downtown El Paso's appeal had slowly eroded from merchants and venues closing like the once-popular venue Tricky Falls.

And now, retailers Fallas Discount Store and CVS Pharmacy have also announced their storefront closures.

So far, El Paso's downtown revitalization plans have included the addition of the ballpark, the ongoing fight over Durangito, a new arena, and the nonsense of the Interstate 10 Deck Plaza, which would consist of the construction of a 12-acre deck over I-10 in the downtown area.

New living spaces have also attracted many young business professionals and creators to downtown El Paso. Yet, the lack of retail shops, restaurants, and venues makes it less appealing for many folks.

El Paso billionaire Paul Foster is also actively working on reviving El Paso's landmark Kress building with plans to convert the historic building into a multi-use space featuring restaurants, shops, and wellness spaces.

And while all these ideas and facelifts are great - for someone who has lived in downtown El Paso for most of her life, a grocery store, in particular, would be a logical addition.

Grocery stores such as Sprouts, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Aldi, heck even a Walmart Neighborhood Market would all be ideal markets that would nicely accommodate a visibly missing component for residents in the area.

Even bodegas and local neighborhood markets such as Matas Fruit Store near the Stanton Bridge see a steady flow of customers, which shows how much their presence is needed.

And although it's a long shot, maybe HEB executives who plan on opening stores in the El Paso market soon might want to consider a mini-market downtown. Not only because it's needed but would serve as an anchor attracting future retailers, residents, and customers, thus leading towards the advancement of downtown El Paso's revitalization.
