Tony Harper is a high school basketball institution in El Paso and Texas. The native El Pasoan began his coaching career at Burges in 1968 and has been the head coach at Montwood since the school opened in 1990.

Because of the success of "Friday Night Lights" in book, movie, and television from, Odessa Permian may be the most well known high school program in the country. Mighty 'mojo' may not have the roar they once did, but they don't come to El Paso expecting to lose.

After starting the season 0-3, Coronado has turned its season around with changes at quarterback and even a change at the offensive game plan, which has proved to be successful for the relatively young T-Bird football team.

Burges survived a scare from a very game Jefferson squad to remain undefeated. Franklin looks like the class of 1-5A after their 38-17 win over Montwood. Horizon turned some heads with a 17-0 home shutout over Canutillo

Coronado and Franklin battle every year for west side supremacy.  With all due respect to the up and coming Americas Trailblazers, the east side goes through Montwood and El Dorado.........for now.  Separated by less than four miles, this game has become a neighborhood rivalry.

It's hard to believe, but the 2011 high school season is nearly a month old.  I am incredibly excited for the game of the week.  For one week the 5A superpowers are taking a backseat to the two oldest schools in the city.  For the 80th time El Paso High and Austin will battle each other for the Claw.
