Big money, big TV, big player contracts — all gone because you lost. Midfielder Rogier Meijer’s team, De Graafschap, was relegated on the final day of the season. The catastrophic loss sent him to the turf…where his daughter came out to console her dad!

She might not know it yet, but odds are good they’re both wearing different jerseys next season. And I have to say, he doesn’t look consoled. Makes you wonder what she said. If it was one of my girls, she would’ve been asking for concession money.

Anytime a fat man gets kicked out of an ‘all you can eat’ establishment it’s going to go viral. That is precisely what happened to Wisconsin native Bill Wisth. Wisth is a big boy. He goes 6’6″ and tips the scales at 350 lbs.

Wisth was enjoying what he thought was an ‘all you can eat’ fish fry at Chuck’s Place in Theinsville, Wisconsin. Wisth was twelve pieces of fried fish deep when employees informed him he was ‘cut off.’ The restaurant, citing diminishing supplies and patience, was willing to send Wisth on his way with eight more filets of fried fish.

That wasn’t good enough for our portly protagonist. Wisth refused the eight to go pieces and wouldn’t pay his tab. Police were called, and Wisth was kicked out of the restaurant. Two days later Wisth returned with a picket sign.

The restaurant claims there is another side to the story. Chuck’s Place has told reporters that Wisth can’t always pay his tab and they have let him eat there for free.

Wisth told his side of the story to local television reporters.

No, I am not kidding you.

Commissioner Whan of the LPGA understands the policies of Augasta National and feels that even though the club has it’s policies for women not being allowed to be members, he thinks the club should host an LPGA Tournament.

In no way shape or form am I against women or women’s rights but there is something the Commish needs to understand.

When the Olympics were in Atlanta in 1996, the IOC wanted to introduce golf as an exhibition sport but only if both the men’s and women’s competitions could be held at Augusta National.

Augusta said the men’s competition could be held there but not the women’s and thus the IOC chose not to introduce golf as a sport in the Olympics in 1996.

If Augusta National didn’t want the Olympics held there because the IOC wanted the women to play there and most of the same members that were member’s then, are members now, what do you think the answer is going to be?

Every time you think the Augusta and women argument is dead, someone always seems to drudge it up again.

Why can’t people just leave Augusta National alone?

Some people would argue that an individual would be nuts to turn down a potential opportunity to play in the NFL. This is exactly what former Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat has decided to do.

Recently Sweat had the chance to make the Cleveland Browns roster as an undrafted free agent. He turned down the Browns and has decided to attend law school instead. Certain people may say that Sweat is giving up a remarkable opportunity to possibly play for an NFL team.

After all, he did play for The Ohio State University, a program rich in football tradition, and one which is generally competing for a National Championship just about every season. So why not take his exceptional talents to the NFL? Only so many people are even offered the opportunity to play for an NFL franchise.

A few reasons come to mind. First of all Sweat realizes that being an undrafted free agent has its obstacles. Making the Browns roster is no sure thing for him. Sweat, who suffered a concussion in college is also concerned with the health risks associated with playing in the NFL. One can certainly criticize Sweat for this decision especially since he has already faced potential injuries while playing college football.

The NFL is a different story though. The athletes are faster, stronger, and the game will take a toll on a person’s body, especially if they play long enough. Today we are linking concussions to depression and it seems as though numerous former football players’ injuries are catching up to them. In the past year alone Junior Seau and a couple of other former NFL players have committed suicide.

Sweat didn’t make the wrong decision to go to law school, when choosing a career a person should consider their health. After all, it is really all you have in life. Playing in the NFL is a more prestigious career, but is certainly a lot more dangerous too. Sweat’s father has a very successful law firm, and will eventually help his son find a good job in the field of law. Last time I checked being a lawyer was a pretty good profession. The bottom line is, when it comes to a career, it is important to do what you want in life, as long as it makes you happy.

Women’s boxing will make its debut at this summer’s Olympic Games in London, and the US now has its first official team member: 22-year-old Marlen Esparza of Houston, Texas, who secured the spot after beating the snot out of another chick at the women’s world boxing championships in China earlier this week.

Defying the stereotype that lady boxers have the heft of a pallet of bricks, Esparza is a badass of the tiniest proportions — she fell into the featherweight class, which mandates fighters not weigh more than 112 pounds.

Two other American women, Quanitta Underwood and Claressa Shields, were defeated in bouts at the Chinese tournament but may still make the US team if an international commission selects them.

Underwood, 28, is in the 132-pound lightweight category and one of America’s best-known amateur boxers. Since she says she suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, we’re guessing she honed her skills that way (and hopefully put him in the hospital at least once). Shields is only 17 but quickly gained cred when she bested better-known fighters at the United States Olympic trials earlier this year.

Hopefully, women’s wrestling is the next sport to get Olympic recognition. We’ve been holding tryouts at our house for years.

…(Pacquiao) is not welcome at The Grove and will not be interviewed here now or in the future. The Grove is a gathering place for all Angelenos and not a place for intolerance.”

Pacquiao allegedly quoted Leviticus 20:13, which calls homosexuality “detestable” and advocates that gays “must be put to death.” Pacquiao says he’s never read Leviticus, nor quoted that verse. “I’m not against gay people … I have a relative who is also gay. We can’t help it if they were born that way.”

Regardless of his position on gay marriage, Pacquiao may find this still-developing controversy an unwanted distraction as he prepares for his fight against Bradley.

Long time New York City sports radio personality Mike Francesa went on an anti-Twitter rant on his show yesterday. He basically said Twitter is an inane online community for morons who have nothing of import to say (I’m paraphrasing, of course). He went as far as to say Twitter should be banned.

I actually half agree with his assessment. Once you navigate through the mindless hashtags, boring observations, and self aggrandizing celebrity blurbs there is some substance on Twitter. The great irony is that the famous people with nothing to say have 10,000,000 followers while the lesser known people with a lot to say (in 140 character or less increments) have 679 followers.

Francesa also fears Twitter will cut out the middleman, broadcasters and reporters. I disagree with that school of thought. As long as there is a 24/7 news cycle we will need athlete interviews for filler. Twitter is just a vehicle for athletes to express themselves without the dreaded follow-up. If an athlete steps out of line on Twitter (see Larry Johnson and Rashard Mendenhall) the good old fashioned media will be there demanding explanations and apologies.

Much to the dismay of Mike Francesa, Twitter is here to stay. At this stage in his career, Francesa relishes playing the role of the out of touch troglodyte who wants things to go back to the way they were. He has a large platform and audience, but at some point he has to accept that the toothpaste is out of the tube and it ain’t going back in.

Agree or disagree, it was an entertaining rant!

I like the ring’s look and also like the fact that most teams are using white gold instead of yellow gold. It is New York, so Tiffany and Company did design the ring, which is valued at $25,000. However, the team said it only costs about $5,500 to make each one.

(PATRIOT STADIUM, El Paso, TX) — Naoyas Aizawa sandwiched an assist between two goals, and while it wasn’t quite a feast for the El Paso Patriots, a 3-1 win over the North Texas Rayados was satisfying enough to whet their appetite for more in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

They’ll get all they can handle next Tuesday, May 22nd, when the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Pro division come calling.

Until then, Patriots’ fans can feel satisfied after watching Aizawa and fellow forwards David Salas and Michael Griego take bite after bite of the North Texas defense.

If there was disappointment, it was in squandered opportunities for more offense. Consistent in possession and dominant in midfield, El Paso found itself on the Rayados’ doorstep time-after-time Tuesday night, only to be turned away by the solid goalkeeping of Raul Herrera or by its own errant shots.

Griego has only been able to practice with the team twice, once again donning his hometown side’s jersey after completing the season as coach of his own young club team. The rust showed at times Tuesday night, but so did the solid positioning and passing.

Perhaps it was head coach Hugo Samano’s decision to go at North Texas with a 3-4-3 lineup, but it always seems El Paso’s offensive anemia is cured by the transfusion Griego brings. A team that scored only twice in its first two Premier Development League games suddenly scores three times.

It has been the same the last few years, as well.

Aizawa had a lot to do with the end result Tuesday, but Griego’s presence as a holding forward provides a fulcrum on which the rest of El Paso’s offense swings.

It was that solid build-up and some hard work on the wings by Aizawa’s fellow former CF Indios teammate, Sergio Villasenor, that put El Paso on the board in the 26th minute.

From Griego to Villasenor to the nimble feet of Salas to Aizawa, the Patriots danced into the Rayados area; Aizawa taking the final few steps that got him past his marker and got Herrera diving for the shot the forward didn’t take until the goalie was in the dirt.

As pretty as the first goal was, the second may have been the ugliest Griego has scored in his Patriots career. Stretching North Texas on the counter, Aizawa lasered a beautiful cross from the right wing. Griego only clipped the ball. Perhaps Herrera was surprised the ball actually kept moving…but it did, all the way into the net in the 61st minute.

Halftime substitute Raul Rodriguez got Rayados on the board in the 78th minute, blasting a 22-yard direct kick bomb past the Patriots’ wall and goalie Victor Rodriguez.

But as North Texas pushed for the equalizer, El Paso’s counterattack finished the game. No dancing from Aizawa this time, only a 20-yard blast from the top of the box that beat Herrera in the 84th.

The Patriots will hit the road this weekend for a pair of PDL away games against arch-rival Laredo Friday and Austin Saturday before returning home next Tuesday for the Open Cup’s second round against Charlotte.

After that much road food, the Patriots can only hope the home cooking is just as good next week.

Just as dude who wants to keep his girlfriend happy but doesn’t want to get married will propose without setting a date, game publishers sometimes keep rabid fans at bay by giving games vague release dates like “summer” or “August.”

That was exactly what happened to Darksiders II when THQ said it would come out in August rather than June, but the publisher has finally vowed to make an honest woman of the game, saying it’s due out Aug. 14.

In the revolving door world of game news, there’s usually a delay or two for every game that gets an official date. The victim in this case is South Park: The Stick of Truth, an RPG we’re mildly intrigued with but are skeptical will be any good. Kotaku reports THQ has shifted the game’s release window from the non-specific “2012″ to the equally vague “2013.”

Don’t go picking out wedding cakes and place settings just yet, The Stick of Truth. Your man is getting cold feet.

According to Swedish soccer star Freddie Ljungberg, modeling underwear for Calvin Klein can have some unforeseen drawbacks.

Ljungberg, who played midfield for Premier League’s Arsenal between 1998-2007, claims that after he started modeling underwear he’d have issues going out to nightclubs. Why? Well, it appears that many women saw those advertisements and decided to do some field testing.

Freddie recounted this tale of tragedy to the Swedish website Di.Se as he informed the world that women would grab his crotch in any way possible and laugh about it:

“It sounds so cocky … and I will not whine … but if for example, I walked into a nightclub in London girls came back and grabbed my crotch.”

“It was happening everywhere. They came from behind, side, pulled and tugged at me. The worst part was that you could not do a damn thing about it. When I angrily removed their hands, people just laughed.”

“Some people thought that I should blame myself, I had signed with Calvin Klein and played in a top team. But there was no limit to what others thought they were entitled to do.”

We’re not really sure how a nation of men will react to this story but we’ve got a feeling that not many of them are going to feel sorry for Freddie’s plight.

Let Ljungberg’s story be a lesson to all you potential underwear models reading this right now — HAHAHAHAA. Oh man, we couldn’t even write that with a straight face.

A bet can be lots of fun, especially if you happen to come out on the wining side, but when you lose, the fun goes away awfully fast.

Perhaps that was what Russell Mark, an Australian Olympic gold medalist in shooting, was thinking when he made his particular wager.

Mark was so confident that the Australian rules football league team he roots for, Carlton, would beat St. Kilda, that if Carlton somehow lost promised to wear the one-piece ‘mankini’ made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen in the film ‘Borat’ to the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London this summer.

Mark is a world-class athlete who has won both gold and silver medals in previous Olympics for shooting. But he’s not a young and lithe runway model who would look good in such revealing garb. He’s a fairly stocky man, in his late 40s. Imagine him in a crowd of thousands of global athletes in nothing but a brightly colored mankini. What a sight that would be.

Mark has stated that he was probably drunk when he made the bet. The folks who run the Australian Olympic Committee are hoping, without a doubt, that this is one wager Mark has no intention of honoring. For our part, we really hope he does. It would surely be an Olympic first, and he would definitely go down in the history books.

[Reuters]

Apparently, things fell apart late in the second period after Cody Reed of the Coquitlam Adanacs was hit by Jordan Kuziuk of the Nanaimo Timbermen, who was then cross-checked by the Adanacs’ Zachary Hartman. After that, all the players on the field began to tussle. Eventually, both benches emptied and a full-scale fracas erupted. No fewer than 15 players were suspended.

What’s even more startling about this clip is the utter lack of spectators. With the exception of a few fans who shout their disapproval after the fight, the stands are largely empty. Granted, Canada is almost entirely fixated on hockey as the national sport, but this lack of turnout is embarrassing.

Oh well, at least we have this battle royal to remind us that lacrosse exists.

In 1991, Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz had a brilliant idea. He created an event in which people made homemade ‘flying machines’ and attempted to fly them off a pier. Thus, the Red Bull Flugtag (German for airshow) was born.

Most of the homemade contraptions nose dive right into the water below them, but occasionally they are designed well enough to actually fly. On July 24, 2010 in St. Paul, Minnesota the longest flight in Flugtag history was recorded. The St. Paul entry stayed in the air for 207 feet before finally landing in the water.

Thankfully, the Red Bull Flugtag commercial runs a lot during televised sporting events, and I am treated to this historic moment at least three times a game!!!
