The oldest bakery in Texas has withstood the test of time and is nearly as old as Texas is a state. And the bakery isn't slowing down any time soon.

Texas became a state in 1845. In 1868, in the middle of the Texas Hill Country, a bakery opened serving residents of the town of New Braunfels, and for 156 years, Naegelin's Bakery has been a big part of Texas and New Braunfels history.

Naegelin's Bakery serves up doughnuts, cookies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, and of course a lot of bread. And since we are talking about a town with German settler roots, you better believe they have kolaches.

According to, the building is like getting into a time machine with few upgrades made since 1868. In fact, every recipe remains the same since 1868 except for the newer pastries they have added since their opening. The bakery was opened by Alsatian immigrant Edouard Naegelin who, according to MySanAntonio, arrived in New Braunsful at the age of 19 with just a bag of flour.

Naegelin eventually opened a bakery in New Braunfels and moved into the current space in 1870. Three generations later, Granzin's grandfather, Wilburn, purchased Naegelin's in the 1980s.

"Everything is authentic German," Granzin said. "That's our main goal, keeping history alive."

Naegelin's Bakery is open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday's 6:30 to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday's 8:00 to 2:00 p.m. Visit Naegelin's Bakery and their website here.

Sounds like a great place to soak in some history while enjoying something delicious.
