The UTEP Women's basketball team opened their 2018-19 season with an impressive 77-51 win over Alcorn State on Saturday evening.  The Lady Braves scored the first bucket of the game, but that would be their first and only lead of the contest as UTEP cruised throughout the evening.  Zuzanna Puc poured in 18 points as the Miners had four players score double figures.  Redshirt-junior Ariona Gill added 15 points, while sophomore Jordan Jenkins tallied a career-high 11 points, six assists and Katarina Zec contributed with 11 points, and nine boards.  Freshman Conchi Satorre pitched in five points as well.

The Miners' defense was clutch all evening long as they held Alcorn State to 30.2 percent, 16-53 shooting, and forced 20 turnovers.  UTEP took a 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.  The 12-point lead ballooned to a 26-point advantage at 53-27 as the Miners came out on a scoring frenzy in the third quarter by enduring a 16-2 run.  UTEP won the battle of the boards easily as they out-rebounded the Lady Braves by a substantial margin of 48-21.  One thing the team must work on is their turnovers, as they committed 27.  UTEP will next host CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday November 14.  You can listen to all of the action on 600 ESPN El Paso with Steve Kaplowitz and Traci Miller.
