Basketball in the Barrio Returns for its 25th Year

Basketball in the Barrio, an annual tradition in the Sun City established by former UTEP and NMSU assistant coach Russ Bradburd and Steve Yellen, is back for its 25th season.  The event, which caters to El Paso children from the Segundo Barrio takes place at the Armijo Rec Center located at 700 E. 7th Ave Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This tradition is truly a gem for children of the Segundo Barrio as it teaches them tremendous basketball skills over this three day period, and all for the admission cost of only $1.  Music, literature, food and ice cream are also available, which add to the fun and educational experience.  El Paso coaching legend Nolan Richardson returns for this year's event as well, which always adds to the intrigue of this camp.

The event is held in honor of late great El Paso boxer Rocky Galarza, who passed away in 1997.  Galarza was a member of the 1949 Bowie High state championship baseball team and taught boxing lessons to the young people of Segundo Barrio.  It goes without saying that this is truly one of the best camps held in El Paso each year.

Over the past 25 years, countless children's lives have been touched in the most positive way one could imagine thanks to Basketball in the Barrio.  It continues to inspire children from the Segundo Barrio, all while teaching superior basketball skills and introduces them to a variety of positive role models.  Life lessons are critical for success, Basketball in the Barrio continues to offer those kind of lessons and leave a lasting impression on children.
