The Chicago Cubs became the sports story of 2016 when they ended their 108-year-old World Series drought. Are you taking note, NFL teams?

While the jury is still out on which baseball team will be the next to end its World Series drought, we can't help but wonder about some long-suffering teams in the NFL. While we celebrate (or revile) teams like the Patriots, Giants, Cowboys, Steelers, Broncos and others with multiple Super Bowl victories, we often forget about the also-rans. There have been 50 Super Bowls and 13 teams have never won the Vince Lomardi Trophy (although eight won either an NFL or AFL championship in the pre-Super Bowl era).

Taking a look at the droughts sheds some light on how desperate some teams are.

  • Arizona Cardinals -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won NFL Championship in 1947 as the Chicago Cardinals.
  • Detroit Lions -- never appeared in a Super Bowl. Las won NFL Championship in 1957.
  • Philadelphia Eagles -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won NFL Championship in 1960.
  • Tennessee Titans -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won AFL Championship in 1961 as the Houston Oilers.
  • San Diego Chargers -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won AFL Championship in 1963.
  • Buffalo Bills -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won AFL Championship in 1965.
  • Cleveland Browns -- never appeared in a Super Bowl. Last won NFL Championship in 1964.
  • Minnesota Vikings -- never won a Super Bowl. Last won NFL Championship in 1969.
  • Atlanta Falcons -- never won a Super Bowl (team established in 1966).
  • Cincinnati Bengals -- never won a Super Bowl (teams established in 1968)
  • New York Jets -- haven't won since Super Bowl III in 1969.
  • Kansas City Chiefs -- haven't won since Super Bowl IV in 1970.
  • Miami Dolphins -- haven't won since Super Bowl VIII in 1974.
  • Oakland Raiders -- haven't won since Super Bowl in XVIII in 1984.
  • Chicago Bears -- haven't won since Super Bowl XX in 1986.
  • Washington Redskins -- haven't won since Super Bowl XXVI in 1992.

Which team will be the first to breathe a huge sigh of relief and claim a championship? The Cardinals seemed like they were on the right track, but this year has been tougher than expected. The Eagles may have the franchise quarterback, Carson Wentz, to do it. The Vikings defense has been fantastic, while the Chiefs have strong coaching, but will that ever be enough to overlook the one postseason win they have since 1993? And can Matt Ryan ever get Atlanta over the hump?

You can pretty much make a case for any team. Well, except maybe the Browns, right?
