There is a cliche that goes 'a reputation takes a lifetime to build and a moment to destroy.'  Bobby Valentine was never taken seriously after appearing in the Mets dugout in a disguise after being tossed from a game in 1999.

Bobby Valentine may not have been the Boston Red Sox first choice, but he may be the best.  The Red Sox already have the talent to win the World Series.  What they need is a strong personality who can keep egos in check and tighten up an undisciplined clubhouse.

There is a good chance Valentine will flame out in five years.  There is also a good chance he will lead them to a World Series title.

After all, in 2005 he did manage the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first Japan Series title since 1974.
