Now Ex-UTEP Wide Receiver Jacob Cowing Transfers to Arizona

UTEP football was dealt with the surprising news that First Team All Conference USA wide receiver Jacob Cowing entered the transfer portal after the New Mexico Bowl.

On Monday, Cowing announced his decision to transfer to Arizona. Citing family decisions, the Maricopa, Arizona native is now much closer to his two-year-old son.

Cowing will have two years of eligibility left to play football at Arizona. He and former fellow wide receiver Tyrin Smith were the most notable players to enter the transfer portal following the season. Cowing was among the top players in receiving yards and finished the 2021 season with 69 receptions, 1,354 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged a whopping 19.6 yards per catch.

“Dear Miner nation, I just want thank you for all the love the support of my three seasons here at UTEP!” Cowing wrote on Instagram back on Dec. 21. “To all my coaches and all the friendships I’ve got while being here, you guys will forever be family to me. One of the hardest things I’ve done but I have to do what’s best for my family. Coach Dimel, thank you for the opportunity and believing in me and letting me play for you. It was a great journey.”

Since the NCAA adopted the one-time transfer rule in the summer of 2021, Cowing is immediately eligible to play for the Wildcats.

He would make an immediate impact on the Wildcats' roster, which saw two of their most productive receivers in Stanley Berryhill II and Tayvian Cunningham enter the NFL Draft. Their only returning receivers are freshman walk-on Dorian Singer, Jamarye Joiner and Ma'jon Wright, who was eligible this year after attempting to transfer to Middle Tennessee and then returned to Arizona. The Wildcats, who went 1-11 in 2021, also signed 4-star prospect Tetairoa McMillan to their 2022 class.
