JOANN Shutting Down 500+ Stores – What Texas Stores Are Closing?
For the second time in a year, JOANN [fabrics] is filing for bankruptcy and plans to close more than 500 stores nationwide, more than half of the company's 850 locations.
How many Texas JOANN locations are going to be closed?
The company first filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 and quickly emerged as a private company. According to USA Today, JOANN was able to reduce its debt to approximately $500 million, down from $1 billion, after securing financing for restructuring almost a year ago.
Apparently, that effort isn't enough to keep the company solvent.
The 82-plus-year-old company has long been a household name, and thanks to the pandemic, it saw a resurgence four years ago. People were doing lots more crafting, knitting, and sewing as they sheltered in place during the pandemic lockdowns.
Since then, things have changed, and the company has struggled a bit after-sales flattened out and slowly declined.

In their latest bankruptcy filing, the company plans on shedding 533 stores across 49 states. (USA Today) The states with the most anticipated closures are:
- California - 61 stores closing
- Florida - 36 stores closing
- Michigan - 33 stores closing
- Ohio - 33 stores closing
- Pennsylvania - 33 stores closing

The reason behind JOANN filing bankruptcy for a second time
The retailer blames higher costs from shipping overseas products as well as a downturn in demand for fabric and crafting supplies. The company says in a statement,
"After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths to address our ongoing industry, economic and financial challenges, JOANN and its financial stakeholders determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business. Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN."
The going-out-of-business sale for these 500+ locations is expected to begin as early as Saturday, according to CBS News.
