The best way to some up the El Paso Chihuahuas season after the first two weeks is that they win and lose in bunches. Since Major League Baseball instituted six game series for Triple-A last year, the Chihuahuas have split a few series. However, they had not done so by winning their first three games and then losing their next three games. That feat has now been accomplished twice in their first pair of series.

The Chihuahuas won the first three games from Round Rock on the road by a combined score of 27-10. They followed that up with three straight losses and they were outscored 17-6 by the Express. Then, El Paso opened their first homestand of the season last week against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. They scored 24 runs in the first three games and the Chihuahuas took all three games. However, the Dodgers scored 23 runs over the next three contests and split the series.

In the grand scheme of things, a 6-6 record after 12 games is perfectly fine for manager Jared Sandberg. It is just so unusual how the results have transpired so far.

Aderlin Rodriguez is leading the Chihuahuas in RBIs with 11, but he is only hitting .195 in 10 games played. Trayce Thompson has four home runs to lead the club and Matthew Batten is hitting .350 with a pair of stolen bases.

On the mound, Jesse Scholtens has been nothing short of spectacular, with just six hits and no runs allowed in 12 innings pitched. Aaron Leasher and Luke Westphal have also pitched well for El Paso. MacKenzie Gore was brilliant in his first start of the season, but instead of pitching at Southwest University Park, the Padres called him up on Friday to make his big league debut against the Atlanta Braves. Gore did well, giving up just two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings but he did not factor in the decision. The Padres will have an interesting decision to make when Blake Snell returns from the IL.

The Chihuahuas are back on the road this week and they begin a six-game series in Las Vegas tomorrow night at 8:05 pm. You can listen to every game with the Voice of the Chihuahuas, Tim Hagerty on 600 ESPN El Paso.
