On Friday afternoon the group that has spent almost three years trying to save the downtown neighborhood known as Duranguito announced that the Texas Supreme Court chose not to listen to their case and it effectively handed a victory to the City of El Paso to go ahead and demolish the buildings in the area and begin building a voter-approved arena. When I wrote about the decision on Friday, I said that even though it looked like the end of the battle, Max Grossman, the UTEP professor who has been spearheading the fight to save Duranguito, always seemed to have another ace up his sleeve. Sunday afternoon, it would appear that ace has made it's appearance.

Grossman posted as a moderator on the Save The Union Plaza Neighborhood Facebook page on Saturday:

"Friends,
Very soon I will have a major update for you on the “Arena” litigation.
Max"

Sunday afternoon the Paso del Sur group that runs the Save the Union Plaza Neighborhood Facebook page posted this on their page. I wonder what they will roll out on Monday:

"Press Release:
For immediate release: January 19, 2020
Press conference: Duranguito is not defeated
• When: Monday, January 20, 2020 at 10:30 a.m.
• Where: 323 Chihuahua Street (enter from Paisano)
On January 17, 2020, the Supreme Court of Texas declined to review the bond validation lawsuit, initially filed by the City of El Paso in Travis County on May 2, 2017, thereby initiating years of litigation. This decision does not represent a defeat for the residents, preservationists, and community activists of Duranguito despite the fact that the City leadership it telling the people of El Paso that the fight is over. We continue to demand that the City act in an ethical and transparent way. Romelia Mendoza and Antonia Morales, among other residents of the area, with the support of legal counsel and other members of the community, will continue to seek confirmation of their rights to stay at home. Duranguito represents the birthplace of El Paso and we must preserve the historical, architectural, and artistic legacy that Duranguito represents.
Paso del Sur will hold a press conference on January 20, at 10:30 at Chihuahua St. 311 to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the relevance of his words for the residents of Duranguito: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
