El Paso Kids Can Fish for Free at Ascarate Lake Kid Fish Derby
If you're looking to spend some quiet bonding time with your child, consider taking him or her to the Kid Fish Derby this Saturday at Ascarate Park. The Ascarate Fishing Club is hosting the free fishing event for kids ages 3 - 16 this Saturday, June 26 -- and a lack of fishing experience or gear isn't a problem, either.
Ascarate Fishing Club members will happily teach kids fishing basics, and fishing poles and bait will be provided for registered children to use during the event. Just take along a cap, sun screen, bug spray, water, a camping chair or two, and your driver license to check out a pole and you're all set.
The county did a catfish drop in the big lake on Tuesday. Not only was it a 2,000 pound drop, but they've suspended fishing in the big lake until 5:30 a.m. Saturday so chances are pretty good your child will get a few nibbles and bites.
If not from catfish than maybe he or she will reel in a large mouth bass, sun perch, carp, or one of the other types of fish you'll generally find in the lake. Either way, it's bound to be a huge thrill.
Although the Kid Fish Derby is a free event, there will be a $2 per vehicle fee to enter the park. For more details and information visit the Ascarate Fishing Club on Facebook.
