Sean Kugler might be a first-year head coach but he's no stranger to El Paso or the game of football. When he unveiled his first class of recruits on National Letter of Intent signing day, two kinds of athletes stood out -- local stars and hard-nosed players.

Predicting how good a recruiting class will be is like predicting which breed of dog a litter of mutts will most resemble before it's born. You just won't know for awhile.

But one thing Kugler believes you can't teach is the kind of character that will allow a player to respond to challenges. There isn't a great deal of star power with this class of 18 players, but Kugler believes he has a group of gamers with some raw talent that can be molded and focused.

That will include Burges' all-star brotherly tandem of Alvin and Aaron Jones, Franklin OL Derek Elmendorff and Andress QB Ryan Metz, who Kugler believes are El Paso's top college prospects. Kugler is emphasizing local recruiting and hopes these four are just the first of many local recruits to choose their hometown university.

Kugler talked about the four stars as he went over the list of recruits. With apologies to Metz -- we missed the coach's comments about the Eagles' star -- here is what Kugler had to say about the Jones brothers and Elmendorff, as well as what he thought about his class as a whole.
