It is amazing what can happen when a football team known for losing games actually start to win. The UTEP Miners are off to their best start in 10 years and they will open Conference USA play on the road in Rustin this Saturday against Louisiana Tech. The following week, they return home for the first time in a month when they host Southern Miss. Both games will be televised nationally on ESPN 2.

"We are excited to see that media outlets want to broadcast games that include the Miners," UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter told 600 ESPN El Paso. "As our program continues to improve we expect more positive exposure for UTEP."

UTEP also announced that they will be adding fan cutouts into the Sun Bowl for the final four games of the regular season. For $39, you can upload your picture to their online form and the image can include a friend, child, or pet. Fans will have an opportunity to pick up the cutout at the end of the season. The promotion is presented by the Oscar Arrieta Allstate Agency.

I am hoping that UTEP gets creative with these cutouts and places the following Miner legends inside the Sun Bowl: Don Haskins, Mike Price, Bob Stull, Aaron Jones, and Don Maynard. There are many more former players and coaches that would deserve consideration inside the stadium, but they are too numerous to list. A caller on SportsTalk had a terrific idea off-air when he suggested that the university auction off all of the legendary Miners cutouts after the season. If the UTEP athletic department could get those cutouts autographed by each individual and then awarded to the highest bidder, I think fans would love to opportunity to showcase them inside their home or office.
