1972 — Steve Carlton, who had 27 victories for the last-place Philadelphia Phillies, was named the National League Cy Young Award winner. (More info.)

1969 — Billy Kilmer of the New Orleans Saints and Charley Johnson of the St. Louis Cardinals each passed for six touchdowns to set an NFL record of 12 passing touchdowns in a game. (More info.)

1986 — Grete Waitz won her fifth consecutive New York City Marathon — and her eighth overall. (More info.)

1991 — The University of Nevada rallied from a 35-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Weber State, 55-49, and complete the biggest comeback in NCAA football history. (More info.)
