In less than a month, the surviving members and families of the 1965-66 Texas Western College National Championship team will be honored at the February 6th game between UTEP and Western Kentucky. The event will culminate the 50th anniversary celebration of the Miners' historic 72-65 win over Kentucky at College Park Maryland. Tickets went on sale this morning for the game, and can be purchased online.

To get fans in the mood for the special occasion, here is a video of the 1966 team performing defensive drills. It is the only surviving audio that I am aware of that features a 36-year old Don Haskins explaining some of the basic fundamental defensive sets that his team practiced. The film was produced by Coca Cola, and the Miners were so excited to enjoy it after a workout. Gatorade was created the year before at the University of Florida, and most sports teams would pop open a bottle of ice cold Coca Cola to enjoy after a big game. You can only imagine what Coach Haskins and his players were saying as they were drinking the soda. I also love the short sleeve shirt that The Bear wore while practicing with his team. The video was uploaded almost six years ago by UTEP's official YouTube account. It is a must-watch for any UTEP fan as well as basketball coach.
