There is a new mural in Central El Paso and it’s shining light on the beautiful relationship El Paso has with our sister city, Juarez.

After a year of planning and designing mural artist, Kelsey Kilcrease, was proud to unveil her passion project, the “You Belong” mural that sits on a wall right outside of the Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services, Inc.

“This mural has been a passion project in the making for over a year, and it is a love letter to my hometown of El Paso, a bridge between cultures,” said Kilcrease.

The mural features a mother and son with the words ``You Belong” painted in bright yellow and butterflies surrounding the mural.

Kelsey wanted to create a mural that showcased selflessness and unconditional love so she decided to do a modern take on Mary, and Jesus.

This is the first outdoor mural for Kelsey and she was able to complete the mural with the help of her cousin.

What makes this mural even more special is the fact that it pays tribute to her grandmother, Olga and her uncle, Davy.

“To our family, she is the personification of love and selflessness. She would do anything for her loved ones to love and comfort them. My uncle passed away unexpectedly leaving her and our family heartbroken. She would have gone to the ends of the Earth to save him. The opportunity to paint her beautiful face and share her as a beacon of hope is something I will cherish forever,” wrote Kelsey on her Instagram page.

This is also the first mural that Kelsey has done in El Paso and it helped her become more familiar with DMRS and the work they do for our community.

“I wasn’t familiar with DMRS beforehand, but when my childhood friend Becca Canak approached me, and told me about their organization, I knew right away that it was something I wanted to work on,” said Kelsey.

Kelsey has received nothing but positive feedback from the community and she hopes that when people see this mural they read the words, “You Belong” and know that they have a place in this world and that they feel embraced by the El Paso Community.

“I hope that when you see this mural, you see your mother, your grandmother, your family. For at the end of the day, we are all human beings who want to give our families and ourselves the best possible life,” said Kelsey.

This beautiful mural is located on the corner of Yandell Dr. and Poplar St: 2400 E. Yandell Dr.
