'Tis the season to be jolly? Not in Texas. 2020 has really taken its toll on Texans as a new study found that Texas ranks 42 for Christmas spirit. The team over at CenturyLink analyzed two data categories: online activity and area culture. For online activity, they used four key metrics:

  • Google searches for Christmas movies and gingerbread houses (29%)
  • Online shopping (via Google Shopping Trends) for wrapping paper, Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments, and “Elf on a Shelf” (28%)
  • Christmas music streams (14.5%)
  • Tweets about Christmas (7%)

For area culture they used two key metrics:

  • Number of Christmas tree farms per capita (7%)
  • Charitable giving in the last documented tax year, as defined by the IRS (14.5%)

Texas is lumped in with the other Grinch states: New York, Arizona, California, Delaware, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii and Florida. Alternatively, Utah ranks as having the most Christmas spirit.

What is it about this year that has us ranking in top ten for least Christmas spirit? Maybe it's the lack of snow- snow would definitely help it feel like it's Christmas. We're one of seven out of the ten states with the least Christmas spirit with mild or warm winters.

However, this ranking shouldn't dictate how you and your family celebrate the holiday. Sure, this year has been a dumpster fire- but Christmas time is considered the season of perpetual hope. Maybe some Texans just need a little push getting into the Christmas spirit whether it be baking some holiday treats or watching a Christmas classic! Either way, there's always next year!
