In two days, UTEP men's basketball will honor one of their most popular fan favorites. The Miners will host UAB Thursday night at 8pm, and the school is planning a tribute to Hernell “Jeep” Jackson, their point guard from 1983-1987. Jackson collapsed at a benefit basketball game at Fort Bliss and passed away on May 2nd 1987 as a result of birth defects in his heart.

UTEP will be giving away Jeep Jackson trading cards to the first 5,000 fans and a special jersey t-shirt to the first 1,000 fans. They have already released a special video tribute that has been posted to their YouTube channel, highlighting his playing career with the Miners. In addition, they have released several vignettes featuring comments from current head coach Tim Floyd, who recruited Jackson to El Paso while he was an assistant for Coach Haskins. Former Miner Fred Reynolds, radio voice Jon Teicher, sportscaster Fred Albers, and longtime El Paso Times writer Bill Knight also shared their memories of Jeep on UTEP’s YouTube channel.
