UTEP Basketball Grabs Chipola Transfer Guard Carlos Lemus

UTEP basketball received a commitment from Chipola College transfer guard Carlos Lemus over the weekend to round out the 2022-23 season's roster.

Second-year head coach Joe Golding had a task to retool the roster that saw 10 players depart from the 2021-22 roster and had one player graduate in Alfred Hollins. UTEP now has now filled all 13 scholarships with Lemus taking the final one for the Miners.

Through 52 games played at Chipola from 2021-23, Lemus averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, while shooting 46% from the field and 37% from 3-point range. On paper, Lemus could be a formidable replacement for former guards like Christian Agnew or Jorell Saterfield. Lemus seems like he could be a versatile two-way player, as he averages nearly 2.0 steals per game.

Prior to Chipola, Lemus played his freshman season at Southeastern Iowa Community College, where he averaged 11.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The Cumana, Venezuela native stands at 6-foot-3 and graduated high school from Upper Room Christian High School (Dix Hills, New York).

The UTEP men's basketball team now has six players with ties to the JUCO ranks, including Malik Zachery (South Plains), Tae Hardy (Pearl River CC), Mario McKinney Jr. (John A. Logan College), Jonathan Dos Anjos (Florida Southwestern College), Derick Hamilton (Bossier Parish Community College) and Lemus.
