Fall is the best season. Sure, Spring has adorable Easter and cute flowers, Summer has the Pool and vacations and Winter has Christmas and pristine snow. But Fall has, among so many wonderful things like Halloween and the opportunity to put back on your boots, the FAIR. How I long to see those bright lights!

Almost any town in Texas has its own version of the "county" fair, with rides, shows, very large pumpkins, and most importantly, incredible food. The cool Fall air carrying the scent of something deep-fried is like a rich salve on my Taurus soul.

The biggest and wildest fair in Texas is, of course, the Texas State Fair. It's been around a whopping 135 years, yearly it's the longest-running fair in the country (at 24 consecutive days), and it's one of the largest fairs in the country, too. Also, Big Tex lives there. And died there. And lives there again.

So on to the best "ride" at any fair- the decadent, naughty, innovative, and original food. Interestingly, none of the new food happens to be on a stick. Coincidence, or are sticks passé? I'm sure there's plenty of stick stand-bys. The new items are the result of a competition to bring the yummiest of the yum to the fair:

Since 2005, the Big Tex Choice Awards contest has solidified the State Fair of Texas as the top Fair for great food creations. Each year, State Fair concessionaires fry up tasty and unique foods for a chance to become a finalist in the annual Big Tex Choice Awards competition. Everything from Fried Beer to Fried Peaches and Cream has made the cut to become a part of the exclusive club of fried food creations.

The awards ceremony to determine the winners of this competition will be announced on the State Fair's Facebook on August 29th. My money is on Brisket Brittle but my heart wants Deep Fried Halloween to win.
