Texas Lt. Governor Kills Sports Betting & Casino Hopes
It Looks Like You'll Have To Keep Going Out Of State To Place Your Bets For The Foreseeable Future.
As sports betting continues to sweep across the country, a recent bill in the Texas Legislature that would have started the process to legalize gambling has essentially been killed by the Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.
House Joint Resolution 102 by State Rep. Jeff Leach (R–Plano) along with its House Bill 1942 Are The Bills That Were Proposed.
The two House bills would have legalized sports betting in Texas pending voters approval on the ballot in November. After hours of debate, The House ultimately approved the measure last week by a vote of 101-42, barely clearing the two-thirds requirement for passage.
But Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick Says "Its A Waste Of Time".
Patrick, in a series of tweets, says the measure won’t make it through the Senate claiming that the measure, despite being proposed by members of HIS OWN PARTY, was passed by a "Democrat majority".
Gambling Will Have To Wait A Few Years To Be Brought Back Up.
According to The Texan, the next opportunity for gambling supporters to make their case to lawmakers will be in January 2025, except in the unlikely scenario that Gov. Greg Abbott calls a special session to specifically consider casinos and sports betting. But for now, you'll have to keep taking your money to Oklahoma, Louisiana or Vegas.
