With the high school football season just about two months away, Zay ranks the top ten toughest non-district schedules.

The Huskies fended off a late, but strong Parkland run to beat the Matadors 56-53 in the regional quarterfinals inside the Don Haskins Center on Tuesday night.

The Texas high school basketball playoffs are heating up, as three Class 5A El Paso squads gear up for the regional quarterfinals round this weekend, along with one local 6A team looking to advance in the area playoff round on Thursday.

In the varsity boys basketball universe, the Chapin varsity basketball program has separated itself from the rest of the competition.

The Irvin Rockets gave the Chapin Huskies all they could handle in the first set of the teams' District 1-4A showdown at Irvin before the Huskies survived, 27-25. But Chapin then went on to dominate, winning the next two sets handily, 25-8, 25-6, to move to 6-0 in district play.

Facing the Jefferson Foxes, the Mustangs dug themselves into a massive hole. Heading into the fourth quarter, Burges found itself down 21-6, and quickly running out of time.

Burges survived a scare from a very game Jefferson squad to remain undefeated. Franklin looks like the class of 1-5A after their 38-17 win over Montwood. Horizon turned some heads with a 17-0 home shutout over Canutillo.

Bowie is going into the game 2-2 (0-2) district. Chapin football is coming off a a win which makes the winning streak to 3.

It's hard to believe, but the 2011 high school season is nearly a month old.  I am incredibly excited for the game of the week.  For one week the 5A superpowers are taking a backseat to the two oldest schools in the city.  For the 80th time El Paso High and Austin will battle each other for the Claw.
