To say it's been a traumatic week for the city of Boston would be the understatement of a lifetime. Sports has given Bostonians that sense of normalcy they've been craving since Monday's bombing.

Whether you used to open the pack for the powdery gum or the excitement of seeing which cards you got to add to your collection, baseball has secured it's place in America's pastime, but more recently has made history when it comes to where this sport is going in the near future.

There have been numerous significant trades in baseball history, some that have even changed the future of certain franchises.  On Saturday the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired half of the Boston Red Sox roster, or it would seem they did by getting 4 Red Sox players in a 9 player trade that can only be described as historical.

Bobby Valentine will be the new Boston Red Sox manager, as soon as the two sides get the contract worked out. The 61-year-old former Rangers and Mets skippper has a career record of 1,117–1,072 as a manager, but he hasn’t managed in the US since 2002. Valentine found success in Japan where in 2005 he guided the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first Japan Series title in 31 years.

After a mediocre year with the Red Sox, John Lackey will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow that will sideline him for all of the 2012 season. Lackey disappointed Sox fans in his second year with the team posting a 12-12 record with a 6.41 ERA.

As the Boston Red Sox are expected to name Ben Cherington their next general manager on Thursday, the man who used to occupy that position, Theo Epstein, gave his final farewell to the team’s fans on Tuesday morning in a letter in the Boston Globe.
