LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State has announced Athletics Director McKinley Boston will step down at the end of the year.

The school said in a statement Wednesday that Boston's contract would be extended until Dec. 31 and then a replacement will be named.

The move came after New Mexico State University President Garrey Carruthers finished a performance review of Boston but declined to comment on the review.

Boston has been the school's athletic director since 2004. Under his tenure, New Mexico State joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2005. But the football program was left without a conference last season after the Western Athletic Conference opted to no longer sponsor the sport.

The Aggies played independent schedule in 2013 but will compete as football-only members of the Sun Belt Conference this season.
