The NBA may be in lockout mode, but that doesn’t mean league activities have stopped. Owners have proposed adding a third round to the annual draft, which could lead to even more sweeping changes to the annual event, according to The goal is to create a more competitive balance of power across the league.

One proposal would keep the entire first round to the league’s bottom half of teams, pushing the better franchises into the second round. Another proposal would give the league’s worst eight teams additional first round picks. The third round of the draft was abolished in 1989 when the league moved to the current two-round format. Some people are ecstatic about this plan, which could really make a difference in helping the bottom teams crawl out of the cellar. But it could also create more problems and accusations that teams are tanking games toward the ends of seasons as they eye valuable first round picks.
