UTEP quarterback Kai Locksley's suspension has been lifted and now fans have to be asking themselves, will he be the opening day starter? Locksley played in nine games for the Miners in 2018 with eight starts, while throwing for 937 yards and three touchdowns.  Most of his damage was done on the ground though as he rushed for 340 yards with six scores.

With seven quarterbacks heading into camp Ruidoso, the Miners will have to choose their opening day starter, which will be here before you know it as they host Houston Baptist on August 31.  Heading into training camp Coach Dimel had noted that senior Brandon Jones was the team's number one starter at QB, but that was before Locksley's reinstatement.

Here's the bottom line folks, despite the allegations against Locksley, it is clear that the legal process is going heavily in his favor at this point or he would have not been allowed to rejoin the team.  Locksley was brought here to be the starting quarterback and therefore will be just that.  Coach Dimel made it clear following spring practices that he was their starter for the upcoming season.

Understandable that this was prior to his arrest back in June, but clearly Locksley has the backing of UTEP Athletic Director Jim Senter and Coach Dana Dimel.  Is he skating on thin ice?  Damn right he is as Dimel noted that a "zero-tolerance policy will be in effect."  Nevertheless, like it or hate it, Locksley will be there as the Miners' opening day starter and will most likely give the team the best chance of winning.  Last time I checked, that is exactly what fans want; a winning program.
