How Mexico Views The Texas Revolution

They don't dwell on it. No hard feelings or anything, the battle for Texas' independence from Mexico just isn't as big of a deal to them as it is to us.

Nobody likes to lose and countries especially don't like losing huge chunks of land, all the accompanying resources and large amounts of their citizenry. Mexico has many reasons to totally rue the day they lost Texas. That's not the reason why they tend to jump over that moment in history classes though. It's because they were busy.

The fall of the Alamo galvanized Texans who were dying, (literally), to be free of Mexico's rule and the subsequent battles sent the Mexican army back home with its tail between its legs and one of its most revered General's, Santa Anna, a prisoner of war.

Texas' Most Important Moment

The ultimate victory of the Texas forces is the high point of Texas history and also pretty damn important to the rest of the country being that it got the USA a huge amount of land and resources. That victory is a cherished moment in both Texas and US history and you're damn right we, Texans especially, are proud of it.

Mexico Doesn't Talk About It

On the other hand, Mexico is pretty "meh" about it. It merits barely a mention in Mexican history courses but not because they're sore losers or anything like that. It's because, as important as it is in our course of history, in theirs, it wasn't that big of a deal.

They had way bigger fish to fry and those fish were key to more important moments in their history. Losing Texas paled in comparison to other battles and internal struggles so, it's just a blip in time for them. They devote their historical studies to the moments that made Mexico, Mexico.

History Mexico Does Find Important

The things that shaped Mexico and its development weren't defined by some rowdy "tenants" in Texas. Mexico was quickened by a number of bigger battles going on at or about the same time as the war for Texas.

• Siege of Guanajuato, 1810 - Mexico fights for its own independence from Spain
• 1835 - 1836 - The Texas Revolution
• Battle of Buena Vista - 1847, a key battle during the Mexican - American War
• Battle of Puebla, 1862 -  This time, trying to get out from under the rule of France. It's also the reason for "Cinco De Mayo" - something else that's big here but not there.
• Battle of Celaya, 1915 - The Mexican Revolution is on, this battle pitting Pancho Villa and his guys against General Álvaro Obregón and his forces.

All of that makes Mexico what it is and they are the reasons why, all in all, the Texas Revolution wasn't and isn't studied as intensely over there as it is over here. Overall, while important, it wasn't as important as those other events.
