From now through August 4th, go easy if you're driving in Socorro. A special operation designed to to reduce speeding will be in effect for the next 2 weeks.

Operation: Slowdown is underway in Socorro as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's "Be Safe. Drive Smart" campaign.

There will be more cops on the streets of Socorro for the immediate future and they're all pretty much just looking for one thing ... speeders.

Operation: Slowdown only uses officers from, and in, Socorro to target speeders and aggressive drivers and is being funded by a grant from TXDoT.

The El Paso Police Department is not involved in "Operation Slowdown," but they are putting some extra traffic patrols of their own on the street under the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program. (STEP) Their funding comes from a grant provided by the state of Texas.

Last year in Texas, there were 1,456 people killed in speed-related crashes, a third of all traffic deaths in the state, the department of transportation reported.

TxDOT reminds drivers to monitor their speed to the road conditions, such as driving through work zones and bad weather. Drivers should slow down to allow more space to stop when roads are wet or traffic is heavy and should watch for traffic signs about reduced speed limits ahead. - EPTimes

TXDoT also reminds folks that sometimes even the speed limit is too fast. They encourage drivers to adjust their speed accordingly for bad weather and work zones. You should also slow down when traffic is heavy and/or roads are slick.
