It could end up being the biggest basketball game inside the Don Haskins Center this season - and it does not involve a UTEP Miners team.

High school basketball fans have a chance to pack the Don for a postseason matchup between the No. 18 Chapin Huskies and the Parkland Matadors.

Both teams won last week to advance to the Class 5A regional quarterfinal. Those games are typically played hours away -- like in the Permian Basin or even farther away.

But what sense would that make since this matchup pits two El Paso area high school teams?

It doesn't, so the no-brainer is playing it at a neutral site here. But there's a catch:

That's right, UTEP has to charge a facilities fee in order for the game to be played at the Don. Waiving the fee would leave UTEP open to NCAA violations.

But good news:

And it turns out EPISD and YISD will split the cost of that facility fee in order to play at the Don Haskins Center.

The BUZZ is palpable. Check out this design created by a local graphic designer:

The Assistant Director for Athletics at El Paso Independent School District is calling on all local high school basketball fans to come out to the Don even if you're not a fan of either team:

Ticket prices are still being worked out, but the game is set for Tuesday, February 28 at 6 p.m. Gates will open at 5:15 p.m.

The winner will not only have Northeast El Paso bragging rights but also a spot in the regional semifinal.
