Franklin Prevails Against Americas In A Memorable Game
The Franklin Cougars knew that in order to have any chance at winning District 1-5A that they had to defeat Americas. The Cougars played a superior game as they pulled away in the final 6 minutes to defeat Americas 56-42.
The game was a back and forth seesaw battle that included non stop scoring by both teams. By the end of the first quarter Americas led 14-7. The Trailblazers scored two rushing TD's in the first quarter, including a 51 yard run by Isak Washington. By halftime the game was tied at 21-21.
Franklin quarterback Cameron Candelaria already had two touchdown passes and a 22 yard touchdown reception. Americas' Isak Washington had 99 rushing yards and 2 TD's at the half. Americas came out in the 3rd quarter and scored on their first possession as running back Andrew Ramirez found the endzone on a 1 yard TD run.
The score gave Americas a 28-21 lead, but it didn't last long as Franklin running back Nickolas Bingham rushed for a 7 yard touchdown on the Cougars ensuing possession. Franklin missed the extra point, hence Americas led 28-27. The remainder of the game both teams traded scores, Franklin's defense stepped up and caused 3 turnovers.
The Cougars went on to win the game with a tremendous offensive performance as they scored 3 touchdowns in the final 6:58 of the contest. With the victory the Cougars improved to 4-3, 3-1 in District 1-5A. Quarterback Cameron Candelaria had a stellar performance going 17 for 26 with 306 yards with 3 passing TD's, 1 rushing, and a touchdown reception.
With the loss Americas is now 4-3, 2-2 in District 1-5A which now has a 5 way tie for first place. Wide receive/running back Isak Washington had 208 yards rushing, scored 3 TD's, and now has over 1,400 all purpose yards for the season. Next week the Trailblazers will face Eastwood, while Franklin pays Montwood a visit. These last few weeks of high school football should be quite exciting to say the least!
