For only the fifth time ever, a former NMSU baseball player has been called up to the Major Leagues. Daniel Johnson, who starred for the Aggies and was the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016, was added to the Cleveland Indians opening day roster. He joins joins Fernando Ramsey (1992 Chicago Cubs), Mark Acre (1994-97 Oakland A's), Jason Rakers (Cleveland 1998-99, Kansas City 2000) and Tyler Sturdevant (Tampa Bay 2016) on the all-time list of New Mexico State's MLB representatives.

Johnson was taken in the 5th round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft by the Washington Nationals and traded to Cleveland two years later as part of the Yan Gomes deal. Last season playing for Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, the Vallejo, California native hit a combined .290 with 19 home runs, 77 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases. He was named the 13th best prospect in the Cleveland Indians organization by MLB.com. The Indians begin their 2020 season at home against the Kansas City Royals. Johnson is not in the opening day lineup but he could receive an opportunity to get into the lineup at some point for the Indians this weekend.
