BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic has withdrawn Carl Pelini's resignation as football coach, and has fired him instead.

FAU interim President Dennis Crudele sent Pelini a letter on Tuesday, saying that the school is firing him because he "failed to timely report certain conduct" of a member of his staff.

Pelini resigned Oct. 30 after FAU athletic director Patrick Chun said he acknowledged using illegal drugs. Pelini has denied that claim, though a member of Pelini's former staff wrote an affidavit that he witnessed drug use.

Crudele's letter indicates that Pelini will not appeal.

By being fired and not resigning, Pelini now cannot be held responsible for a $500,000 separation fee, which the school could have pursued according to the terms of his contract.
