El Paso's COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and death rates are skyrocketing. On Wednesday morning, the staggeringly high number of new COVID-19 cases, 3,100, shocked El Pasoans. Over the past week, the El Paso County Judge, Ricardo Samaniego, and Mayor Dee Margo have been locked in a media and social media fight about how far a shut down of non-essential businesses should go. We've seen another UTEP football game cancelled because of what their opponent, Florida International University says is an abundance of caution. A number of El Paso restaurants have file a lawsuit that was joined by the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to try and force County Judge Samaniego to allow a return to in-restaurant dining. And now, a local high school's parents have said enough is enough to the remainder of their football season.

Fabens High School announced that they were canceling their Friday night game against Mountain View High School. The Fabens team was suddenly dwindled to 12 players because parents began to pull their kids from the team citing concerns about COVID-19 exposure.

A local news station spoke with the Fabens High School Wildcats head coach who said the game against the Mountain View High School Lobos was going to be the last game of the season because his team wasn't going to be going on to the playoffs.

From a high point of 100 players trying out for the team, to 60 players on the team at the beginning of the season, Coach Jake Belshie said the reduction in players on the team happened because "parents were worried about their kids."

With a season record of 0-3, it's a tough end to a tough football season, but I think these parents took the right path. Yes, seniors didn't have the senior season they wanted, but at this point, anything a parent can do to reduce their kid's exposure to this disease that is running rampant through our area is the right thing to do.
