CINCINNATI (AP) — A University of Cincinnati backup quarterback has been jailed on an assault charge.

Hamilton County Jail records show 22-year-old Jarred Evans was booked at 3:52 a.m. Sunday on a misdemeanor assault charge. Police say Evans knocked a man down with a punch that caused a concussion and cuts requiring stitches. Other details weren't available.

A University of Cincinnati athletics spokesman says in a statement that it would be inappropriate to comment. The statement says coach Tommy Tuberville is aware of the arrest and gathering information.

Evans is from Queens in New York City and is coming off his best game as a Bearcat. The former Santa Barbara City College player scored his first touchdown and gained 67 yards on 10 carries in the Bearcats' 41-3 victory Saturday at Southern Methodist.
