1851 — The New York Yacht Club was awarded the Hundred Guinea Cup after the schooner America defeated 14 British boats in a race around the Isle of Wight. The cup was renamed the America’s Cup in 1870. (More info.)

1950 — Althea Gibson became the first African-American competitor on a US tennis tour when she played at the US Open in Forest Hills, NY. (More info.)

1957 — Floyd Patterson knocked out Pete Rademacher in the sixth round of their fight at Sicks Stadium in Seattle to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1965 — Pitcher Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants used his bat to attack John Roseboro of the Los Angeles Dodgers during a bench-clearing brawl at Candlestick Park. (More info.)

1989 — Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers recorded his 5,000th career strikeout. (More info.)

1998 — While chasing Roger Maris’ single-season home run record, Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals acknowledged he had been using the supplement androstenedione for more than a year. (More info.)

1999 — Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe set the world record in the 400-meter world freestyle at 3 minutes 41.83 seconds at the Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney. (More info.)

2007 — The Texas Rangers routed the Baltimore Orioles, 30-3, at Camden Yards in Baltimore, setting a record for most runs scored in a game by a team in modern MLB history. (More info.)
