FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots have signed rookie running back Sam McGuffie to their practice squad.

To make room for McDuffie on Friday, the club released rookie running back Cierre Wood from the practice squad.

On Thursday, New England released cornerback and special teams player Marquice Cole, leaving a slot on the 53-man roster open.

McGuffie can also serve as a practice slot receiver, a position he played at Rice in his senior year — making 54 catches.

Wood, from Notre Dame, played in three games with the Houston Texans before his release and was signed to the Patriots' practice squad Nov. 5.
