EA Cancels Plans for Next NCAA Football Game

EA is currently re-evaluating the future of its NCAA Football franchise, but the publisher has already scuttled plans for a new entry for 2014.

Since 1997, EA has published NCAA Football for various platforms, but Cam Weber, GM of American Football for EA Sports, has announced this year’s NCAA Football 14 will be the last entry for now. “Today I am sad to announce that we will not be publishing a new college football game next year, and we are evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise,” Weber said. “This is as profoundly disappointing to the people who make this game as I expect it will be for the millions who enjoy playing it each year.”

The news isn’t all that shocking for fans who’ve been following the legal proceedings EA has been mired in with the NCAA and its student athletes. The NCAA previously pulled its support of the franchise after this year’s iteration was published, as did a few major conferences in the system. For what it’s worth, EA has also just settled its ongoing suit over player likeness in its football video games. According to the New York Times, terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, but EA and fellow defendant Collegiate Licensing Company have agreed to terms with the athletes. The NCAA is now the lone defendant in that case.

For now, EA will continue to support NCAA Football 14, but the future of the franchise is in serious jeopardy. Unless things change drastically with the NCAA and its athletes, we may not see another college football game for some time.
