Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored two goals apiece to lead the Los Angeles Kings over the New Jersey Devils 6-1 on Monday night, giving the West Coast franchise its first ever Stanley Cup by winning the best-of-seven series four games to two. Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced in the decisive Game 6, allowing only Adam Henrique’s goal near the end of the second period. Quick, who was spectacular throughout the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy after the game as the playoffs’ most valuable player.

Team captain Dustin Brown beat New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur at 11:03 of the first period to start the scoring for the Kings and give them a 1-0 lead that they never relinquished. Carter followed with his seventh goal of the playoffs, and Lewis added another tally to make it 3-0 after one period. All of the first period goals came during a five-minute power play awarded when New Jersey’s Steve Bernier was ejected for boarding the Kings’ Rob Scuderi.

Carter’s second goal made it 4-0 just 1:30 into the second period. The home crowd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles grew raucous in the third period, as Lewis added an empty net goal to push the lead to 5-1. Matt Greene made it 6-1 for L.A. at 16:30 to finish the scoring and help make the Kings the first eighth-seeded playoff team to win the NHL title.

Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter won his first Stanley Cup as a player or coach. Sutter was behind the bench of the Calgary Flames when they lost the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals. He never appeared in the finals as a player during his eight-year playing career with Chicago from 1979-1987. Brown became just the second American-born captain to raise the Stanley Cup.
