As Wigan Athletic took to the pitch this afternoon at home against the mighty table leaders Manchester United, they new that nothing short of perfection was needed to get the 3 points they needed to get out of the relegation zone.

Perfection is exactly what Wigan provided

Wigan Athletic had taken to the pitch 14 times against Manchester United and 14 times United had won.

Not today.

With what can only be described as an inspired effort, Wigan started the game strong and pressed United the whole match. Never letting up for a second. If not for a phantom call in the 29th minute that erased a beautiful unmarked header by Victor Moses, Wigan would have coasted to a 2-0 victory.

In the 50th minute though, the pressure and patience paid off for Wigan as Shaun Maloney(pictured) bent in a goal past United keeper David De Gea to give Wigan a well deserved 1-0 victory.

Make no mistake, this was not the result that Manchester United expected at all.

As United was losing to Wigan, Manchester City was winning at home against West Bromwich Albion to bring Man City to within 5 points of table leaders United.

The title chase in the English Premiere League just got really interesting.

Each club has 5 matches remaining on the schedule and wouldn't you know it, on April 30th, Manchester City hosts Manchester United.

So thank you Wigan Athletic! I can't wait to see how this unfolds!
